7. Imperatives: Giving Simple Instructions and Requests

Need to tell someone what to do, give directions, or make a polite request? Imperatives are the direct and clear way to give instructions. Learning this simple form will make your daily communication much more effective. ✍️

Function & Usage

We use the imperative form to give a direct command or instruction. The subject “you” is always understood, so we don’t say it. We can make it polite by adding “please.”

  • Instructions & Directions: To tell someone how to do something.
Example: Turn left at the corner. Open your books to page ten.
  • Requests: To ask someone to do something (often with “please”).
Example: Please sit down. Pass me the salt, please.
  • Commands & Warnings: To give a strong order or to warn someone of danger.
    Example: Stop! Be careful!

The Structure (Form)

The imperative structure is the easiest in English! You just use the base form of the verb (the verb without “to”).

Type Structure Example
Positive (+) Base Verb (+ Object) Close the window.
Negative (-) Do Not (Don’t) + Base Verb Don’t close the window.
Polite Please + Base Verb Please close the window.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Adding a subject: The subject “you” is always implied, never stated. Incorrect: “You go now.” Correct: “Go now.”
  • Changing the verb form: Always use the base form of the verb. Incorrect: “Sits down.” or “To sit down.” Correct: “Sit down.”

Let’s see it in action! 🎬

Local: Go straight for two blocks, then turn right. Don’t walk too fast, you have plenty of time.

Parent: It’s hot in here.
Child: Okay, Mom.
Parent: Please open the window. And bring me a glass of water.
