Nuances of Modal Verbs

At the C1 level, understanding modal verbs goes beyond basic function. It’s about grasping the subtle differences in meaning, formality, and implication. This lesson focuses on past modals used for speculation, regret, and criticism.

Scope & Content:

  • Past Modals for Speculation: `must have`, `might/could have`, `can’t have`.
  • Past Modals for Regret/Criticism: `should have`, `shouldn’t have`.
  • Degrees of politeness and formality.

⚠️ Attention: Common Challenges

1. Speculation about the Past: The structure is `modal + have + past participle`.

  • Certainty: “The ground is wet. It must have rained last night.”
  • Possibility: “She’s not here. She might have missed the bus.”
  • Impossibility: “He looks happy. He can’t have failed the exam.”

2. `Should have` for Regret and Criticism: This structure is used to talk about a better action or choice in the past that did not happen.

  • Regret (about yourself): “I should have studied harder for the test.”
  • Criticism (about others): “You shouldn’t have said that to her.”
