Comparatives & Superlatives
We use comparative and superlative adjectives to compare people, places, and things. Comparatives compare two things, while superlatives compare one thing to all others in a group.
Scope & Content:
- Comparatives: `bigger than`, `more expensive than`
- Superlatives: `the biggest`, `the most expensive`
- Basic spelling rules and irregular forms.
⚠️ Attention: Common Challenges
1. Short vs. Long Adjectives: The form depends on the number of syllables in the adjective.
- 1 Syllable (add -er/-est): old → older → the oldest
- 2 Syllables ending in -y (change y to i, add -er/-est): happy → happier → the happiest
- 2+ Syllables (use more/the most): expensive → more expensive → the most expensive
2. Irregular Adjectives: Some common adjectives have completely different forms that must be memorized.
- good → better → the best
- bad → worse → the worst
- far → farther/further → the farthest/furthest
